Early days of Sheffield

About 1950, one of the lady school teachers at the Sheffield elementary school got up on opening day of deer season and got her a buck on one side of the Pecos then crossed the river and got another buck on the other side of the river and made it to school in time for class.

I don't recall what the rules were in those days except that you could get a mule deer on one side of the river and a whitetail on the other. The story was duly reported in the local paper. The paper could have been any one from Fort Stockton to San Angelo.
